Weight Loss Disipline

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

There were two keys to successful weight loss . The first is to find weight loss information that actually works, not the politically correct feel-good pap that’s printed all over the mainstream media.

But information is only good if one applies it. That is the second key; discipline. After a lifetime of bad eating habits and sedentary living, it requires discipline to transform into a healthy lifestyle. Discipline to refrain from eating junk food and pick healthy choices instead, discipline to drag yourself out of bed and to the gym instead of hitting the snooze button.

Perhaps the greatest show of discipline lies not in doing those things, but to continue to do those things when you stumble. This is where many weight loss plans fail; you off to a good start, make a mistake – skipping a workout or perhaps binging – and you give up on your weight loss efforts.

You will have occasional setbacks if you do not have the discipline to completely stick to your own plan. Very few people successfully lose weight without having setbacks. Those who do succeed did so because they had the self-discipline to press on in spite of their setbacks. This type of self-discipline is known as persistence. People who persist ultimately succeed, in weight loss, in business, in life. As long as you keep moving on, you will never lose the battle of your weight loss. The good news is that anyone can improve their self-discipline, regardless how much they have been lacking in the past. Stick with your weight loss efforts, continue to research weight loss information and you will have a great body in time for swimsuit season.

Weight Loss Plans

Saturday, November 8th, 2008

Most diet and weight loss programs have a depressingly high failure rate, with people either never reaching their weight goals or reaching them and regaining all the weight they lost (and sometimes more) in about one year.

So let’s examine the downside of dieting.

What Is An Unhealthy Weight Loss Program?

  • Any weight loss program that is not nutritionally sound;
  • One that works against what the body naturally needs like vitamins, minerals, and a minimum number of calories a day;
  • One that requires you to go without eating (for example, fasting or meal replacement drinks);
  • One that puts your body into an unnatural state, such as starvation or ketosis.

Your body can only lose a few pounds a week on a consistent basis. If you lose more than that initially, it’s likely just water loss. So any weight loss program that promises you will lose five pounds a week, or 25 pounds in 3 weeks, is guaranteeing you will be losing water and muscle mass not fat.

Almost every popular weight loss program out there falls into one of the following diet categories: low calorie diets, meal replacement drinks, packaged foods, unbalanced nutrients, and ketosis diets. Let’s see how they stack up.

LOW CALORIE DIETS

Whenever you drastically reduce your calories, the body enters an unnatural state and its defences kick in. So when calories drop below, say, 1000 calories a day, your metabolism will shut down in an effort to conserve energy. And weight loss with a sluggish metabolism is very difficult.

Your body will start using muscle tissue to provide energy, which again leads to a decrease in the metabolism. Taken to an extreme, the body will break down its vital parts (such as the heart muscle) trying to meet its energy needs.

In addition to these drawbacks, trying to maintain the weight loss over time is nearly impossible because your body is now used to making do with very few calories. Going back to “normal” eating causes the weight to pile back on.

For this reason, low cal weight loss programs rarely work over the long haul.

MEAL REPLACEMENT DRINKS

One of the most unnatural things for your body is to go without solid food, which is what meal replacement plans ask it to do. Some people think that dieting will be easier if they aren’t confronted with daily food choices and the pounds will just fall off. This may be true while they are on the liquid diet. But what about afterwards?

Where will the good eating habits come from after you’ve lost the weight? This is something that takes time, practice and knowledge. Dieters need to establish a healthy attitude towards a life-long eating plan. And no “fad” weight loss program or liquid lunch can help you with that.

Getting hooked on meal replacements can become a destructive way to view food. It often leads dieters to fear food or binge to “feed” their cravings after a long period of deprivation. And that’s just the psychological side of the equation.

The lack of fiber in such weight loss programs can be a threat to good physical health. And when the body is denied enough solid food, the intestines go into overdrive absorbing calories and nutrients. This helps you during the diet period, but later it makes it much easier to regain the weight.

Another yo-yo weight loss program that hurts you in the end.

UNBALANCED NUTRIENT PLAN

Be cautious about any weight loss program that has strict rules about good foods and bad foods. Sure, high fat and high sugar foods might be considered bad for the waistline, but moderation not abstinence is key to success.

Why? Because eating the same foods every day (say, grapefruit or high protein meals) is going to result in two things: nutritional imbalance and boredom.

All foods are made up of the same nutrients in different amounts: fat, carbohydrates, and protein. It is the right proportion of these nutrients that will bring about weight loss - not the avoidance of “bad” foods and the consumption of only “good” or magical foods.

In the world of dieting, no one food or nutrient group is magical. Variety and moderation are the keys to a healthy diet and a successful weight loss program.

PACKAGED FOODS

To stay at your ideal body weight, you have to learn how to make proper food choices. By following a packaged food weight loss program you are postponing the inevitable, and spending plenty of $$$ in the process.

Another problem with this kind of weight loss program is that the foods provided are not always healthy. Read the package label and you will see chemicals, preservatives, sodium, sugar and saturated fats. And when all you can eat is packaged food, how do you plan meals with other people? Going out to restaurants and parties and enjoying family meals becomes a big hassle.

Your weight loss program then becomes a burden, not only to you, but to those around you.

KETOSIS DIETS

Ketosis has been defined as:

“An abnormal condition marked by excessive production of ketone bodies. Often caused by high-protein, low-carbohydrate diets such as the Atkins diet.”

Atkins and certain other weight loss programs are based on the principle of restricting carbohydrates to the point that the body enters into ketosis. On the surface, a ketogenic diet seems to work for two reasons: First, you’ll lose large amounts of weight, which is very pleasing to the dieter. Secondly, you don’t experience hunger.

But there are serious drawbacks. Your weight goes down due to water loss (which occurs when you restrict carbohydrates) and a loss of lean muscle tissue. This is NOT true, lasting weight loss.

The loss of appetite comes from having ketones building up in the body, which can harm your health. Side effects of a ketosis weight loss program can include fatigue, kidney stones, gout, and muscle loss. The longer you follow such a diet, the greater the risk to your health.

Clearly not a wise choice of weight loss program, not for the short term or the long.

Weight Loss Pills

Friday, November 7th, 2008

Weight loss pills have become popular in the past several years. There are two basic types of diet pills or weight loss pills - ‘prescription’ and ‘non-prescription’ pills.

Prescription Pills :

Prescription weight loss pills are treated like drugs. They require FDA approval and are closely regulated. Some examples of this type of weight loss pills are Xenical (Orlistat), Meridia (Sibutramine) and Phentermine/ Fentermine. To prove their effectiveness in weight reduction, these pills are subjected to a range of clinical tests typically for monitoring health risks and side effects.

Non Prescription Pills

The Non-prescription weight loss pills are also called as weight loss supplements. These drugs can be purchased over the counter as they are subjected to minimal FDA regulation only. Some examples of this type of weight loss pills include pills from TriVita, Metabolife™ and Herbalife™ as well as fat-burners, herbal weight loss pills, stackers, other sports or diet supplements.

The difference between prescription and non-prescription weight loss pills is becoming narrower. Since some types of non-prescription pills can be just as powerful as weight loss drugs. Exception is that these types of weight loss supplements are not regulated similar to prescription weight loss pills. The FDA has issued warnings recently about weight loss supplements that contain ephedra. Hence, many drug manufacturers are now declaring as ‘ephedra-free’ by removing ephedra from their weight loss pills.

Who can benefit from Weight Loss Pills?

Prescription weight loss pills are designed specifically for the treatment of obesity rather than mere weight loss. Despite health risks and side effects, the use of weight loss pills is justified, as obesity is a serious condition associated with serious health risks. Weight loss supplements or Non-prescription weight loss pills should be viewed in similar light.

Do these Weight Loss Pills work?

The answer is both Yes and No. With a proper exercise program and diet in conjunction with medical supervision, weight loss pills or weight loss supplements can be effective in the short term at least. However the benefits may quickly wear off as the body adjusts rather quickly to many weight loss pills.

Weight Loss Trials of Pills clinically:

Clinical weight loss trials demonstrate that by using weight loss pills alone, long term weight control is not possible. A combination of improved diet and physical activity is to be maintained in the long term to maintain weight loss successfully.

Consult your doctor before taking weight loss pills:

You should obtain information from your doctor about the possible dangers and side effects of weight loss pills before taking any weight loss pills.

Lose Weight USA

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Maintaining a healthy weight isn’t a special secret, in fact natural weight loss is about eating properly and regular physical activity; this guidance is lost on many! This is not as simple as it seems though even though the concept is easy to comprehend; a third of overweight Americans and millions globally, would disagree with this advice. The conflicting aspect is that a large percentage of overweight people are desperately trying to lose weight whether it is because they are tired of the looks they receive or for health reasons.

The strange thing is though that it is so much easier to stay trim than it is to lose weight because as soon as you start putting on weight, many things become more difficult. Subconsciously we all know that if we do not maintain a healthy food program for ourselves, we will start to add extra pounds.

Health experts say that most people who are trying to lose weight usually stray and tend to go back to their old eating and non-exercising habits even after they learn to enjoy low-fat eating. Extra weight often results in health issues and can negatively impact on one’s emotional state and self-esteem but all this can be cured with a healthy, natural weight loss program.

The truth is there is a huge price to pay with your health when you are overweight and in particular, clinically obese. If you think about it, losing excess weight by natural methods is the most acceptable way to get rid of those extra pounds but too many people want a ‘quick fix’ system.

Maintaining a natural lose weight plan means sticking to low fat meals that are high in fiber and contain complex carbohydrates with a moderate amount of protein. A meal containing this group would be something like a baked potato, vegetables and some meat, lean of course but it would not contain gravy or sour cream.

Dietary fat is a problem because it is full of calories which will be converted into body fat unlike calories that are consumed in food from other sources. Another problem is the obsession with fat free or low fat foods that food manufactures are stacking the shelves with which despite their popularity are not helping people lose weight.

Whilst completely false, the perception is that you can basically eat exactly what you want provided it is fat-free but there are still calories in the food which can easily be converted to body fat. The term fat-free can be a trap if you start to believe that you can eat any amount of fat-free food when it is far better to respond to hunger with healthy snacks.

Schools of thought differ on this subject but many nutritionists agree that eating smaller meals with a snack every 3 to four hours or between meals could be beneficial providing main meals are not missed. If you are really serious about trying to lose weight, you will have to consider natural weight loss as a long term proposition.

Eating the Right Foods For Weight Loss

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

Dear Winners,

The biggest problem with most people gaining weight is due to the quantity
of food they consume.

That sounds obvious but you need to understand that there is often a good
reason why some people feel the need to consume larger quantities of food
than others and in doing so become overweight.

It all relates to the types of foods that we eat and their nutritional value. If you eat foods that are low in nutritional value they will leave you wanting more because they haven’t delivered the nutrients required to supply you with the energy you need and they haven’t satisfied your appetite.

They have left you feeling hungry and it is human nature to eat more food until that hunger goes away.

If you were to eat the right foods your nutritional needs would be met and you wouldn’t feel hungry. If you didn’t feel hungry you wouldn’t continue to
eat and that in turn would ensure that you didn’t gain excess weight.

You can understand now why fast foods are responsible for the high incidence of weight problems due to the simple fact that they aren’t delivering the essential nutrients that the body needs.

By making some simple changes to the foods that we eat and replacing those foods that are low in nutrition with more appropriate foods for healthy
living it becomes a lot easier to maintain a good bodyweight without having
the burden of hunger to contend with.

The problem with most diets is the fact that they are just too hard to
maintain for any amount of time and this shouldn’t be the situation as hunger is not supposed to be a part of a balanced lifestyle.

Good food in good quantities will help you to maintain a healthy bodyweight
and you will feel satisfied after your meals.

3 Day Weight Loss Diet

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

This 3 Day Diet is a rather famous low calorie crash diet. Some people say that the “special combination of foods” in the menu plan helps produce weight loss in just three days. Claims have been made that you can lose up to 10lbs in just three days.

Here are the instructions for the the 3 Day Diet:

Day One
Breakfast: Black coffee, tea, or water; 1/2 grapefruit or juice; 1 slice toast with 1T of peanut butter
Lunch: 1/2 cup tuna; 1 slice toast; black coffee, tea, or water
Dinner: 3oz. any lean meat; 1 cup green beans; 1 cup carrots; 1 cup vanilla ice cream; black coffee, tea, or water

Day Two
Breakfast: Black coffee, tea, or water; 1 egg (any style); 1 slice toast; 1 banana
Lunch: 1 cup cottage cheese or tuna; 5 saltine crackers; black coffee, tea or water
Dinner: 2 beef franks or hot dogs; 1/2 cup carrots; 1 banana; 1 cup broccoli or cabbage; 1/2 cup vanilla ice cream; black coffee, tea, or water

Day Three
Breakfast: Black coffee, tea or water; 5 saltine crackers; 1 slice cheddar cheese; 1 apple
Lunch: 1 hard boiled egg; 1 slice toast; black coffee, tea, or water
Dinner: 1 cup tuna; 1 cup carrots; 1 cup cauliflower; 1 cup melon; 1/2 cup vanilla ice cream; black coffee, tea, or water.

Note: You are allowed to use sugar substitute with your coffee. You are also allowed to use lemon, salt and pepper, mustard, and cooking spray when preparing food.

It’s quite possible that you’ll lose pounds if you adhere strictly to the weight loss diet. For one thing, the menu plan is very low in calories. In addition, you must drink a lot of coffee, which acts as a diuretic and helps you to lose water weight. Because the diet lasts for only three days, people are likely to stick with it.

But what happens after the three days are over? You might be excited at losing so much weight in such a short time, but those pounds were mostly water weight, not fat. You’ll regain the weight almost immediately when you go back to eating normally.

There’s also a problem with the inclusion of ice cream in this diet. While there’s nothing wrong with ice cream in moderation (and you do eat it in moderation on the weight loss diet), you could start thinking about the ice cream as a reward for sticking to your diet during the day. This is an unwise pattern of thought, to associate food with good behaviour. You want to learn to reward success with something other than a treat.

The menu plan lacks essential nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids and B vitamins, to name just a few. The meals can in no way be considered a healthy eating lifestyle.

The weight loss diet may help some people jump start their way into losing weight. But most people will return to their usual eating habits after the three days. This can lead to a yo-yo dieting effect which is known to adversely affect your metabolism.

Plenty diets and weight loss eating plans are much safer and more effective than this one. It’s really tempting to go for the quick weight loss. But your efforts will be completely wasted unless you are committed to better eating practices after the three days are up.

Eat A Big Breakfast to Lose Weight

Monday, October 6th, 2008

Eating a big breakfast, heavy in carbohydrates, is the key to weight loss, according to new research.

A new study found that women who eat half of their daily calories first thing in the morning lose more weight in the long term than those who start the day with a small breakfast.

And they are also less likely to pile the kilos back on.

Dr. Daniela Jakubowicz, from the Hospital de Clinicas in Caracas, Venezuela, who led the study, said: “A very low carbohydrate diet exacerbates the craving for carbohydrates and slows metabolism. After a short period of weight loss, there is a quick return to obesity.”

It is thought that eating a meal packed with protein and carbohydrates helps cut cravings for sweet or starchy foods, and boosts the metabolism.

Scientists compared the “big breakfast” diet with a strict low-carbohydrate weight-loss regime.

Jakubowicz and a team at Virginia Commonwealth University studied 94 obese, inactive women and found that low-carbohydrate dieters initially lost more weight.

The strict low-carbohydrate diet caused an average weight loss of 28 pounds; the big-breakfast version cut 23 pounds.

However, after eight months, the strict dieters had regained 18 pounds. The big-breakfast eaters continued to drop weight, losing another 16.5 pounds.

Those on the big breakfast diet lost more than 21 percent of their body weight, compared with just 4.5 percent for the low-carbohydrate group.

Women who ate a big breakfast reported feeling less hungry, especially before lunch and had fewer cravings for carbohydrates than the other women did. The big breakfast dieters ate an average of 1,240 calories per day, 610 of which were consumed at breakfast. The low-carbohydrate dieters ate just 1,085 calories per day.

The findings were presented in June at ENDO 08, the 90th annual meeting of The Endocrine Society in San Francisco.

Lose Weight USA - Exercise

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

The idea of this weight loss exercise program isto develop a consistent approach to weight loss as well as a healthy endurance when exercising. The program’s objective is to get rid of the excesses in your body, the excess fat. Not the healthy and lean muscle tissues and body fluids.

The program first requires your focus and dedication, so therefore you need to be prepared in both mind and =96 of course =96 body. It is highly advised that you first visit your doctor for a check-up before embarking on any weight loss pro=
gram.

It is important that when starting on any program, one should be positive enough to work for the results. Some people get impatient easily but long term effects are assured as long as one sticks to the weight loss plan at hand.

Stretch, stretch and stretch some more. Before actually doing those exercises and working out those muscles, a little stretching is needed in order to avoid any injury or soreness in your body.

It is also not advisable for anyone to try too hard. Everything should be done in moderation. Find the level of exercise and training that suits you. It should be enough for you to be comfortable in but not too convenient that it will not be much of a challenge.

The first day of the program involves a long and steady walk in a little over twenty minutes. After the walk, follow it up with a good stretch. This takes so little of your time for the first day. In less than an hour you have taken that first step to a weight loss program that will work to your advantage.

By the second day, it is good to focus on an upper body workout. This maintains your strength to be able to go through the whole program for the week. On the third day, a brisk walk or jog for ten minutes is in order. For beginners, a lower body workout should be done in the evening.

In the fourth day, a good rest is in order, as well as a good stretch. This lay time should be used wisely though to sort out any negatives in your mind set. The fifth day starts with a good ten minute walk. Exercise the lower body in four sessions of workouts, follow this up with another ten minute walk, and another four sessions of lower body workout.

The sixth day should be spent on a low impact exercise such as swimming. To avoid boredom, do not be afraid to try something new. The last day of the week is a time to solicit the support of the people you care about. Spend time with them or get them to be with you in your long walk. Again, follow up your walk with a light upper body workout.

This is just the beginning though. If by this first week you are able to stick to the program, you have a great chance to further boost your weight loss and stay with the plan until you achieve your desired result. Try as much as possible to be unlike the people who give up easily just because they could not see the result they want at the time they want like this moment, today, now! Patience is a virtue. The same way it took your body time to gain all that weight, think about it as the time your body will have to exert just to get weight loss.

Weight Loss Exercises

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Weight loss exercises. Exercise helps you to lose your love handles and tone your muscles. Two types of activities, aerobic and anaerobic exercises will help with weight loss.

What are aerobic exercises? The latter hinges on you breaking into a sweat as you work at moderate intensity over a period of half to one hour. This works your heart and lungs, taking in more oxygen for you to cope with the exercise. The energy expended will come from your body fat and the fat burning process will continue a few hours after your workout. Suitable weigth loss aerobic exercises are jogging, swimming, squash or singles tennis.

Anaerobic exercises on the other hand, allow you to take breaks in between sets due to the high amount of effort needed. You also may or may not break into a sweat. Think of doing repetitions in an air-conditioned gym and the time lapsed and the few minutes rest required between each set. For anaerobic weight loss exercises, you do not take need to take in as much oxygen. As a result, it is carbohydrates (not fat) that is burnt, but is also essential in any weight loss program. However, you are burning fat, but indirectly. Due to the explosive nature of anaerobic exercises, it builds up your muscles, increasing your metabolic rate and burning fat even after your exercise.

Remember you need to have a medical checkup prior to adding exercise to your weight loss program and not run to the gym and start training like a ferocious animal. A improvement in fitness should be attained gradually to prevent injury. Slow and steady is the way to go for weight loss.
