Weight Loss USA - Hoodia

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

Hoodia belongs to a category of plants called succulents. Hoodia plants resemble a cactus, and has the consistency of a cucumber. The Kalahari Bushmen of Southern Africa don’t eat Hoodia for the taste, but for releasing energy and curbing hunger. For many years the plant has been a dietary mainstay for hunters on long trips. It helps them ward off hunger, thirst and pain while they are hunting and foraging for food.

The weight loss industry regards the wonder slimming plant Hoodia Gordonii as the ultimate weight loss product. Currently, there are around a dozen types of Hoodia, and only one however, Hoodia Gordonii, contains the active ingredient called p57, which is believed to function in the suppression of appetite. There have been no randomised controlled studies of the effects of Hoodia Gordonii on humans, only anecdotal evidence, mostly after local Bushmen in Southern Africa ate parts of the plant and lost the desire to eat, or had a feeling of fullness.

A clinical trial conducted by Hoodia manufacture Phytopharm demonstrated that repeat dose administration of large doses of Hoodia extract caused a statistically significant decrease in daily calorie intake. By day 15 the calorie intake had decreased by approximately 1000 kcal per day.

At present, the media has come up with a flurry of reports about the miraculous wonder of Hoodia Gordonii as simple, nutritional support for weight loss. Hoodia Gordonii has been featured on the Internet, and in all print and television media and radio. It is reported as beneficial weight control when used as a dietary supplement or in drug research.

It was reported that some people who took Hoodia have noticed their appetites reduced within 20 to 30 minutes, and probably lasted for several hours. Their craving for food has diminished, they feel full and experience delays in the onset of hunger. People also have reported an increased sense of wellbeing. In some users, it may take up to 2 to 3 weeks for Hoodia to achieve the desired maximum effect. Hoodia has not been reported to make users feel jittery or anxious, so it is not a stimulant. In fact, there are very few side effects reported with the use of Hoodia.

These days, Hoodia is often marketed and sold in the form of capsules, powder, and Trans-dermal patches, and has been added to the formula of several already-established weight loss supplement brands. Hoodia Gordonii provides great promise for controlling caloric intake - a key factor in the control of body weight.

While obesity reaches epidemic proportions, the afflicted become increasingly desperate to find new weight loss ways. You’ll eat less, gain a feeling of fullness, feel less hungry, and have a better chance of weight loss; Hoodia can even fight obesity if used properly. Hoodia can also help in elevating your mood and increase your energy level.

The benefits of Hoodia are a major example of how the traditional use of folk remedies of natural origin can form a basis for research that may often result in scientific breakthroughs. .

Weight Loss USA - Zone Diet

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

A majority of individuals are well aware of the benefits of weight loss. Although for most, the primary reason is its cosmetic rewards, there are those who are intent on weight loss to attain good health. True, much is to be gained if one is fit, but more so if they are fit and well. There are basically countless options of measures to take if one is intent on achieving health and fitness. Although there are a significant proportion of individuals wanting to shed off excess fats and pounds through quick-fix means such as diet pills and fad diets, there are also those who adhere to the rule of healthy weight loss.

Nevertheless, the market is inundated with innumerable diet pills and fad diets made available to those who are decided on being trim and fit. Fad diets have certainly become appealing to so many with the manner they have been publicized. Offering weight loss miracles, many of those who desire fitness in a speedy way resort to fad diets although some of them may be unhealthy. As much as these trendy diets seem initially effective, some of them may have unhealthful consequences such as binge eating as these diets more often entail deprivation. There are however healthy recourses for diets which are reasonable and effective at the same time.

One of them is the currently introduced Zone diet. The zone diet is referred to as the weight loss diet of the celebrities as it is often kept to by Hollywood personalities. The zone diet, more than anything else though, is not a fad diet. The man behind the zone diet is Dr. Sears, and through years of research, he was able to make an accurate formula and combination of foods which promote the body’s fat burning potential. The popular zone diet is gaining a wide acceptance in the current market as adherence to it entails unique measures and result as well.

Researchers behind the zone diet have found means for an individual to make full advantage of the foods taken and promote weight loss. Keeping to the zone diet means consuming a combination or formula of certain foods and drinks that spur the body to an overdrive causing it to burn unnecessary fats consequently making an individual lose weight. The now famous zone diet works to stabilize and increase the insulin output of the body making it more readily burn fat. Unlike other fad diets that entail deprivation and starvation, the zone diet in fact adds two more meals to the regular meal regimen.

In most cases, the healthy zone diet does not require an individual to give up certain foods or food groups but a mere adjustment of their consumption. As the zone diet is not a fad diet, it does not promise to work by magic. The results of the zone diet are not apparent in days which indicate that it is a healthy one. There is, however a standard timetable in which an individual must strictly keep to in the zone diet to maintain the proper procedures necessary to help build the body’s natural defences against weight gain. Through this measure in the zone diet, the body is trained and conditioned to accept and decline certain foods to keep off the pounds that have been lost.

While adhering to the zone diet, it may also be helpful to resort to weight loss products such Leanology and has been proven to be safe and effective. Adhering to a healthy diet such as the zone diet and the augmentation of an effective natural weight loss product is sure to deliver the best benefits on losing and maintaining weight.

Lose Weight USA - Tips

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

Before you pledge allegiance to a particular diet plan, take heed. More often than not, weight lost through dieting finds its way back into your body.

But the news is not all bad: While prevailing lore states that 95% of people who lose weight regain it within a few months or years, recent research shows that roughly 20% of overweight people successfully manage to keep the pounds from coming back on.

Still, that’s a low success rate, and it underscores the inherent flaw of the dieting mentality — which seeks a quick, often drastic fix for habits that were years in the making.

So, what is the best approach to long-term weight loss? Rather than counting every calorie or scratching entire food groups from your diet, make healthful eating — along with fitness and stress reduction — a part of your daily lifestyle.

By thinking of weight loss not as a primary goal but rather as a by-product of making important health choices, you are on your way to addressing the underlying causes of weight gain — not merely the symptoms.

Healthful diet
Both American Eastern Institute and food journalist Michael Pollan succinctly advised in a recent New York Times article: “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.”

These 3 points form the basis of a healthful diet:

1. Eat food. “If it’s something your great-grandmother wouldn’t recognize,” says Mark Hyman, M.D., author of UltraMetabolism: The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss (Scribner, 2006), “you probably shouldn’t eat it.” Choose whole fresh foods rather than processed food products. In other words, don’t just avoid processed and refined white bread, but also limit enriched whole wheat bread, which is loaded with processed nutrients and preservatives. Fresh whole grain bread straight from the bakery would be better, while a dish of cooked wheat berries would be even more nutritious. The greater amount of food you eat that is whole and unmodified (rather than being a food product), the more healthful (and — believe it or not — satisfying) your diet will be.

2. Not too much. There’s no getting around that one of the most healthful and effective techniques for weight loss is moderate calorie restriction. Since weight loss boils down to consuming fewer calories than you burn, portion control is a non-negotiable element. To safely lose weight, shoot for a deficit of 250 to 500 calories per day — anything greater could leave you very hungry and more vulnerable to impulsive indulgences with bad-for-you food.

Tip: Restricting the number of calories is one of the most difficult requirements to weight loss. Try substituting quality for quantity. You may find that by choosing organic whole foods, you’ll need less to feel satiated.

3. Mostly plants. Vegetables should make up the largest portion of your diet, as the antioxidants in fresh produce have a powerful effect against the free radicals in our bodies. Also, since vegetables (especially leafy ones) are low in carbohydrates, eating a plant-based diet translates into fewer calories overall. Remember, variety not only adds spice but longevity, too. As omnivores, we require a certain amount of complexity in our diet in order to stay healthy. Include as many different colours and varieties of fruits and vegetables in your diet as you can.

Proper hydration

Don’t underestimate the importance of drinking water for weight loss. Sufficient water intake is crucial for you to achieve optimal digestion, absorption, circulation and waste excretion.

Depending on how much produce you eat, the climate you live in and how much you exercise, you should be drinking an average of 6 to 8 glasses of water a day. Remember that fruit juice, tea, coffee and sodas don’t count as water.

We often misinterpret thirst as hunger — which throws off our natural appetite cues. By staying properly hydrated throughout the day, you will deter false hunger pangs and be able to more easily discern your true hunger levels. Another bonus? Staying hydrated fights fatigue, giving you more energy to stick with your exercise plan.

Tip: Carry a water bottle with you wherever you go so that you have no excuse for getting parched.

Natural supplements
While your focus should be on getting nutrition from whole foods rather than relying on supplements, ensuring basic nutritional support through a few well-chosen supplements is a reasonable backup. Begin with a high-quality multivitamin and mineral combination, and choose a brand that doesn’t contain fillers, binders, colorings agents, gluten or lactose.

For natural compounds that may speed up weight loss, consider calcium, chromium and green tea supplements. While it is unclear how effective these supplements may be in enhancing weight loss, they have few known risks and some potential benefits. Nonetheless, it is not standard medical practice to recommend them.

Calcium (400 to 500 milligrams daily) may play a role in weight control by regulating energy metabolism. Chromium (400 micrograms daily) appears to improve insulin function and blood sugar control — which may make weight control easier. The caffeine and antioxidant catechins in green tea can help enhance calorie burning by increasing thermogenesis (the production of heat in cells). You can either drink several cups a day or take it in capsule form (anywhere from 250 to 500 milligrams daily)

Tip: Taking your vitamins and supplements (either with a meal or just before) may reduce stomach upset.

Stress reduction
Stress and weight gain are closely related. Stress can cause your adrenal glands to release adrenaline and cortisol into your bloodstream, which in turn can cause the body to conserve fat.

Chronic stress throws your metabolism out of whack and can lead to weight gain regardless of calorie intake. Cortisol (the stress hormone) makes your body less sensitive to other hormones — most notably to leptin, the hormone that tells your brain when you are full.

There are other factors at work (i.e., the fact that people turn to food to comfort themselves in times of stress).

Relaxation, experts say, is the best defence against stress. “When someone learns how to consciously acknowledge the presence of stress, he can then make a deliberate choice in how he’ll react to it,” says Steven Gurgevich, Ph.D., author of The Self-Hypnosis Diet: Use the Power of Your Mind to Make Any Diet Work for You (Sounds True, 2007). “Instead of ‘emotional eating,’ they can take a brisk walk, do something productive or use an active or passive relaxation technique.”

Tip: Meditation, yoga, prayer, baths, music, tai chi, hypnosis and breathing exercises all may induce the relaxation response.

Fitness

For people who are more than moderately overweight, exercise can be daunting (at best) and even physically excruciating due to the pressure your weight puts on your joints. But you have to start somewhere: Wendy McClure, a fitness consultant and trainer listed by Men’s Journal as one of America’s 100 Best Trainers, says very heavy people should not jump into an exercise boot camp.

“I often suggest beginning with classes in a pool, because they can move freely in the water for a long period of time without joint problems,” she says.

Walking is another excellent way to launch an exercise program. Walking as little as 15 minutes a day could significantly improve your health. The more out of shape you are, the more fitness gains you will experience early on.

Use a pedometer — available for as little as $10 — and slowly build up to 10,000 steps a day (about 4 to 5 miles). Studies show that this level of activity can reduce blood pressure, significantly increase calorie burn and improve cardio fitness (again, particularly in people who are less fit to begin with).

No matter your baseline fitness level, choose activities you enjoy (ice skating, rock climbing, square dancing), and do them with people you like. Many studies show that people are more likely to stick with an exercise program if they have an activity buddy —the commitment drives people to show up even on days when their motivation is low.

Also, don’t be a fair-weather friend to exercise. “A consistent routine of exercising each day… shows the best and most successful results,” McClure says. It is healthier — and safer — to exercise for 20 to 30 minutes a day on most days than to procrastinate all week and try to punish yourself for 2 hours on a Saturday.

Success with a natural weight loss approach doesn’t equal quick results. By introducing long-term and lasting changes instead of drastic, unsustainable ones, you may lose weight more slowly — perhaps only a pound a week. Still, the more gradual the loss is, the more likely that the pounds will be gone for good.

Lose Weight with Green Tea

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

A number of ‘wonder’ herbs are being used these days for weight loss. Green tea is one of the most interesting; this wonder herb contains ingredients which are still being researched but it is most famous for it’s antioxidant properties. Available as liquid extract, regular tea or tablets, green tea weight loss products are considered to be some of the most effective ways to burn extra calories.

It has a wide range of benefits for the human metabolism but first and foremost, it has great anti-aging properties, accelerating cell regeneration and slowing the oxidation process in the system. Whilst this is an added benefit, weight loss products rely on its ability to work as a natural laxative and use it as a product that purges toxins from the system. The product increases the metabolic rate and the number of calories burnt so less fatty tissue forms.

The use of green tea weight loss products still requires effort on the part of the person who wants to lose weight; meaning exercise and healthy food are still required. Improvement to general eating habits is necessary because the intention to lose weight implies the dieter wants a much healthier lifestyle.

Although green tea can be used at any time of the day and in many ways as a beverage, it is most effective when taken immediately before bed. Weight loss products containing this product can take some getting used too and often there may be some bowel irritation for a couple of days but it will pass. This effect is quite normal especially for new users and is down to the way that green tea weight loss supplements speed up the metabolism so calories do not have time to become fat tissue. Indications that it is working can generally be seen within seven days of use providing other aspects of the diet are followed like drinking plenty of fluids combined with physical activity, fruit and vegetables.

Extracts from the ginseng root are often mixed with green tea as combined; the two prove to be more effective. Ginseng has also been used in China and Tibet for many thousands of years and helps by adding vitamins and minerals to supplement those already being used in the detoxification process.

Increasing the energy and vitality level of the user, ginseng is a valuable addition to green tea products especially for people trying to get back to what should be their normal weight. As with many natural products, no side-effects have been found with green tea and ginseng even when use for extended weight loss periods of six months.

Weight Loss USA - Reduce Chance of Heart Attacks

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

A study from Turkey shows that the heart beats with greater strength when a person loses weight (Heart Vessels, March 2006). The obese patients in the study received echocardiograms to predict their risk for heart failure by measuring their left ventricular function. After they lost at least ten percent of their total body weight, the strength of the contractions of their hearts increased significantly. This study shows that weight loss should be part of the treatment for heart failure if the person is overweight. It also explains why being overweight makes you tired and short of breath, because your heart has to work much harder to push blood through blood vessels blocked by fat. Weight loss improves heart function and also helps to prevent diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, kidney damage and even certain cancers.

A blood test called HBA1C will help your doctor decide if you are at risk for a heart attack, even if you are not diabetic. When your blood sugar level rises too high, sugar sticks to cells. Once on a cell, sugar cannot be removed and is converted to a poison called sorbitol that destroys the cell to damage arteries and cause heart attacks. HemoglobinA1C (HBA1C) measures how much sugar is attached to cell membranes. A study in the Archives of Internal Medicine (Volume 16, 2005) shows that an HBA1C level below 4.6 percent means you are at very low risk for a heart attack. However, each one-percent increase raises the risk for a heart attack nearly 2.5 times. So people who have HBA1Cs above 4.6 are at increased risk for heart attacks, even if they are not diabetic.

More than 40 percent of Americans die of heart attacks and other blood vessel damaging diseases and 35 percent ultimately become diabetic. That means that all people who have HBA1Cs above 5 should consider weight loss by eating less and exercising more, avoiding smoking, and going on a diet that limits refined carbohydrates (foods made from flour or with added sugars), saturated fats (meat and chicken) and partially hydrogenated oils. If your HBA1C is above 6, your doctor may prescribe diabetic medications.

Vitamin B-12 - Provides Energy to Lose Weight

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

A study has been recently published that demonstrate the importance of vitamin b-12 in supporting healthy brain functions. The first study we will to point out is The University of Oxford study, published in the journal Neurology, in which they tested the 107 apparently healthy volunteers over a five-year period.

Older people with lower than average vitamin B-12 levels were more than six times more likely to experience brain shrinkage, researchers concluded. Some studies suggest two out of five people are deficient in the vitamin. The Oxford study looked at a group of people between 61 and 87, splitting it into thirds depending on the participants’ vitamin B-12 levels. Professor David Smith, who directs the Oxford Project to Investigate Memory and Aging, said he now planned a trial of vitamin B in the elderly to see if taking them could slow brain shrinkage.

He said: “This study adds another dimension to our understanding of the effects of vitamin B on the brain - the rate of shrinkage of the brain as we age may be partly influenced by what we eat.”

Shrinkage has been strongly linked with a higher risk of developing dementia at a later stage and Rebecca Wood, the chief executive of the Alzheimer’s Research Trust, said further research was needed.

“This study suggests that consuming more vitamin B-12 through eating meat, fish, fortified cereals or milk as part of a balanced diet might help protect the brain. Liver and shellfish are particularly rich sources of Vitamin B-12.

Dr Susanne Sorensen, from the Alzheimer’s Society said: “Shrinkage is usually associated with the development of dementia. “As vitamin B-12 may be given as a food supplement, it may be useful to include tests of vitamin B12 levels in the general assessment of health of older individuals.

“This is another example of why it is crucial for people to lead a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet rich in B vitamins and antioxidants. The best way to reduce your risk of developing dementia is to keep active, eat a balanced diet, don’t smoke and visit your physician to get your blood pressure and cholesterol checked.”

Vitamin B-12 is naturally found in foods that come from animals, including fish, meat, poultry, eggs, milk, and milk products. Fortified breakfast cereals are a particularly valuable source of vitamin b-12 for vegetarians. To help improve your daily intake of vitamin b-12 here is a list of some foods that provide excellent sources:

Mollusks, clams - cooked, 3 oz. - 1400 %DV

Liver, beef, - braised, 1 slice - 780% DV

Sockeye Salmon, - cooked, 3 oz. - 80%DV
Yogurt, plain, skim wi 13g protein, - 1 cup - 25%DV

And if you’re searching for dietary supplements to add additional vitamin b-12 to your daily diet, consider

TriVita Sublingual B-12, B6 and Folic Acid
Sublingual B-12, B6 and Folic Acid which serves as an excellent source of vitamins b-12, b-6, folic acid and other b vitamins

Lose Weight USA - SAD Facts

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

This is a reprint from recent weight loss article by Dr. Jeffrey S. McCombs

As our country deals with the effects of past deregulation and the current financial crisis, I am struck by how America has also become deregulated in the area of its dietary choices and the resultant health crisis that is developing as a result. Sound dietary practices have been dismantled and replaced by eating whenever, whatever, and however it suits us in the moment. Common sense management of our food choices has been neglected in favour of fad diet fixes and Flintstone vitamins.

The wisdom of the body as a temple that needs to be cherished and cared for has been replaced by the philosophy of the body as an amusement park and I’ve got a season pass.

It’s no mistake that the acronym for the Standard American Diet is S.A.D. When America exports the dietary principles of S.A.D. to another country, a decline in the health of its people quickly follows. It also holds true for foreigners who immigrate here, as they quickly find out that their health declines and their weight increases when eating as the natives do. In all fairness, America should have signs at its entry borders that warn of the risks that go with adopting our S.A.D. lifestyle.

Using the government’s Body Mass Index (BMI) standard, a calculation based on height and weight, over 66% of Americans are overweight and 34% are obese. If current trends continue, by 2015, it’s estimated that 75% of American adults will be overweight or obese. By 2030, that estimate increases to more than 86 percent of adults, and by 2048, well let’s just say that finding a normal weight person will be like finding a needle in a haystack. The BMI standard isn’t without just criticism, as other body measurements are not considered. When considering the overall trend, however, it’s obvious that Americans are getting fatter and the associated illnesses and healthcare costs that accompany this trend are also on the rise.

Being overweight increases our risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, cancer, liver and gall bladder disease, osteoarthritis, infertility, and various other related diseases and conditions. All of these are signs of lifestyle mismanagement, not medication deficiencies.

I imagine that a pharmaceutical company’s Board of Directors looks upon America’s sedentary lifestyle and standard diet much in the same way that a cannibal looks upon a newly caught fat missionary prior to feasting. Their gains are now our gains.

The pharmaceutical industry continues to propagate the philosophy of there’s nothing wrong with us. It’s not our fault. It’s just genetics, hormones, and other uncontrollable dysfunctions in our bodies that they will soon have a drug for. So, don’t worry, keep eating. For heaven’s sake, there’s no need to deprive your self of anything. Eat! You’ve earned it. Eat! You deserve it. Eat! It’s the holidays. Eat, eat, eat!

President-Elect Barack Obama keeps reminding us that we need to prepare ourselves for making sacrifices in order to correct the excesses of the past. This applies as much to our diet and lifestyle choices as much as it does to the economy. If sacrifices are to be made, then we can choose to sacrifice stupidity for wisdom. We can live up to our potential and leave behind the excuses and reasons for not taking care of ourselves.

Over half of Americans lead a sedentary lifestyle. The current government recommendation calls for 30 minutes of exercise 5 days a week. I have always thought that the government usually gets it half-right. Exercising 60 minutes 5 days a week is probably even better. Start where you are and go from there. Leave the “have to do it/be it/have it now” attitude behind. Evolve your desires to allow for gradual progress to have its impact.

In his book “What May Be” Piero Ferrucci states, “You must not follow your feelings. Your feelings must follow you.” We must begin to exhibit an emotional intelligence that directs our food choices. We must eat with a conscious awareness of how wish we to transform our bodies, for our bodies are transforming from moment-to-moment whether we like it or not. How it transforms can be up to us.

So as Thanksgiving approaches, I believe that it’s time to be thankful for the abundance and opportunities that we have as Americans. It’s time to invest in ourselves and our future. We can create something remarkable with our lives and share our life stories with others. We can be a nation of everyday heroes, ordinary people living extra-ordinary lives.

As an old adage states, “If not now, when? If not me, who?”

Dr. Jeffrey S. McCombs is a 3rd generation Doctor of Chiropractic, author of the book “LifeForce,” and developer of the McCombs Plan. His 25 years of ongoing research and practice emphasizes addressing the nutritional, biochemical, structural, emotional, and environmental aspects of acute and chronic health conditions in his patients

Sublingual B-12

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

Meet Hester - a TriVita Member since 2003. She’s had such a positive experience with TriVita Sublingual B-12 that she’s taking her message to family, friends and colleagues at work.

Name: Hester

Age: 70

Status: Single

Occupation: Full-time employee with Honeywell Corporation

Like so many other people Hester first heard about Sublingual B-12 back in 2003 when she tuned in to a TriVita infomercial. She was impressed with the credibility of co-hosts, James and Betty Robison and Dr. Scott Conard. “I was definitely the perfect candidate for Vitamin B-12,” Hester says. “I was feeling tired and once I started taking TriVita Sublingual B-12 I noticed a big difference in both my focus and energy levels.”

Vitamin B12

Source: University of Maryland Medical Centre - 2006

Vitamin B12, also called Cobalamin, is one of eight water-soluble B vitamins. All B vitamins help the body to convert carbohydrates into glucose (sugar) which is “burned” to produce energy.

Heart Disease

Many studies indicate that patients with elevated levels of the amino acid homocysteine are roughly 1.7 times more likely to develop coronary artery disease and 2.5 times more likely to suffer from a stroke that those with normal levels. Homocysteine levels are strongly influenced by B complex vitamins, particularly folic acid, B6 and Vitamin B12.

Healthy Nerves

Vitamin B12 is an especially important vitamin for maintaining healthy nerve cells and it aids in the production of DNA and RNA, the body’s genetic material. Vitamin B12 also works closely together with folic acid to regulate formation of red blood cells.

Anti-Stress

Similar to other B vitamins, Vitamin B12 is considered an “anti-stress” vitamin because it is believed to enhance the activity of the immune system and improves the body’s ability to withstand stressful conditions.

Vitamin B12 is best absorbed into you blood stream when taken in sublingual form i.e. when it is contained within a pill designed to be placed under your tongue.

Vitamin B12 Boosts your energy and is just what you need to help maintain your fitness regime which is essential for weight loss.
