Vitamin B12

Source: University of Maryland Medical Centre - 2006

Vitamin B12, also called Cobalamin, is one of eight water-soluble B vitamins. All B vitamins help the body to convert carbohydrates into glucose (sugar) which is “burned” to produce energy.

Heart Disease

Many studies indicate that patients with elevated levels of the amino acid homocysteine are roughly 1.7 times more likely to develop coronary artery disease and 2.5 times more likely to suffer from a stroke that those with normal levels. Homocysteine levels are strongly influenced by B complex vitamins, particularly folic acid, B6 and Vitamin B12.

Healthy Nerves

Vitamin B12 is an especially important vitamin for maintaining healthy nerve cells and it aids in the production of DNA and RNA, the body’s genetic material. Vitamin B12 also works closely together with folic acid to regulate formation of red blood cells.

Anti-Stress

Similar to other B vitamins, Vitamin B12 is considered an “anti-stress” vitamin because it is believed to enhance the activity of the immune system and improves the body’s ability to withstand stressful conditions.

Vitamin B12 is best absorbed into you blood stream when taken in sublingual form i.e. when it is contained within a pill designed to be placed under your tongue.

Vitamin B12 Boosts your energy and is just what you need to help maintain your fitness regime which is essential for weight loss.

Weight Loss Pills

Friday, November 7th, 2008

Weight loss pills have become popular in the past several years. There are two basic types of diet pills or weight loss pills - ‘prescription’ and ‘non-prescription’ pills.

Prescription Pills :

Prescription weight loss pills are treated like drugs. They require FDA approval and are closely regulated. Some examples of this type of weight loss pills are Xenical (Orlistat), Meridia (Sibutramine) and Phentermine/ Fentermine. To prove their effectiveness in weight reduction, these pills are subjected to a range of clinical tests typically for monitoring health risks and side effects.

Non Prescription Pills

The Non-prescription weight loss pills are also called as weight loss supplements. These drugs can be purchased over the counter as they are subjected to minimal FDA regulation only. Some examples of this type of weight loss pills include pills from TriVita, Metabolife™ and Herbalife™ as well as fat-burners, herbal weight loss pills, stackers, other sports or diet supplements.

The difference between prescription and non-prescription weight loss pills is becoming narrower. Since some types of non-prescription pills can be just as powerful as weight loss drugs. Exception is that these types of weight loss supplements are not regulated similar to prescription weight loss pills. The FDA has issued warnings recently about weight loss supplements that contain ephedra. Hence, many drug manufacturers are now declaring as ‘ephedra-free’ by removing ephedra from their weight loss pills.

Who can benefit from Weight Loss Pills?

Prescription weight loss pills are designed specifically for the treatment of obesity rather than mere weight loss. Despite health risks and side effects, the use of weight loss pills is justified, as obesity is a serious condition associated with serious health risks. Weight loss supplements or Non-prescription weight loss pills should be viewed in similar light.

Do these Weight Loss Pills work?

The answer is both Yes and No. With a proper exercise program and diet in conjunction with medical supervision, weight loss pills or weight loss supplements can be effective in the short term at least. However the benefits may quickly wear off as the body adjusts rather quickly to many weight loss pills.

Weight Loss Trials of Pills clinically:

Clinical weight loss trials demonstrate that by using weight loss pills alone, long term weight control is not possible. A combination of improved diet and physical activity is to be maintained in the long term to maintain weight loss successfully.

Consult your doctor before taking weight loss pills:

You should obtain information from your doctor about the possible dangers and side effects of weight loss pills before taking any weight loss pills.

How to Lose Weight At Work

How To Lose Weigh At Work

Losing weight at work is not as easy as at home. At home, you can do whatever you want, eat whenever you want too. You can do the treadmill while you are watching television, eat smaller and more frequent meals to boost metabolism. While at work, most time is spend on working, there isn’t enough time for your weight loss schedule. So will we give up?

Here are some ideas to lose weight at work.

1. Move your body more. Park your car a little bit far away from the office, so that you have to walk. Use stairs instead of elevator, walking on the stairs burn more calories than you think. At work, after about 45 minutes, escape from your computer, stand up, go around and talk something to your colleague about the weather, stocks or something else and of course not business in a few minutes. It helps you to move more, and release your stress.

2. Drink green tea instead of coffee and other caffeine beverages. Black tea is also ok, but green tea is better to lose weight because it is fresher. You should use tea bag, making a cup from loose tea takes time and tools such as teapot, tea box…

3. Get up early than usual to make a packed lunch. Include whole grains, lean protein and vegetables. It needn’t be complicated: how about a ham and lettuce sandwich on whole meal bread, with a handful of cherry tomatoes on the side?

4. Go out the office and enjoy you lunch. Throw the business worries away. Why don’t you ask your colleagues go with you, it is a good idea. During lunch, talk about everything that make everyone laugh. Someone has told me that we should chew foods 30 times before swallow them. It is a weird idea, isn’t it? But I think it works. Chewing foods well sends signals to your mind that you are eating, which will reduce the appetite, and foods are cut well by your teeth so that they are digested better, you will feel more energy, move more, and burn more and lose weight.

5. Put a bottle of water on our desk and sip regularly. Water is necessary not only to help you lose weight but also for a healthy body. But you are usually absorbed in work and there is no time for drinking water. Just put a bottle on your desk even the bottle without water inside. It will remind you that “Hey guy, you should drink some water.”

6. Make friends with good foods at work. The best way to say no to junk foods is to feed your body with good foods. Buy bananas, apples, low-fat cereal bars and put them on your desk. Whenever you feel hungry, eat some. You should put them on somewhere that your eyes are caught and throw junk foods away.

Lose Weight USA

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Maintaining a healthy weight isn’t a special secret, in fact natural weight loss is about eating properly and regular physical activity; this guidance is lost on many! This is not as simple as it seems though even though the concept is easy to comprehend; a third of overweight Americans and millions globally, would disagree with this advice. The conflicting aspect is that a large percentage of overweight people are desperately trying to lose weight whether it is because they are tired of the looks they receive or for health reasons.

The strange thing is though that it is so much easier to stay trim than it is to lose weight because as soon as you start putting on weight, many things become more difficult. Subconsciously we all know that if we do not maintain a healthy food program for ourselves, we will start to add extra pounds.

Health experts say that most people who are trying to lose weight usually stray and tend to go back to their old eating and non-exercising habits even after they learn to enjoy low-fat eating. Extra weight often results in health issues and can negatively impact on one’s emotional state and self-esteem but all this can be cured with a healthy, natural weight loss program.

The truth is there is a huge price to pay with your health when you are overweight and in particular, clinically obese. If you think about it, losing excess weight by natural methods is the most acceptable way to get rid of those extra pounds but too many people want a ‘quick fix’ system.

Maintaining a natural lose weight plan means sticking to low fat meals that are high in fiber and contain complex carbohydrates with a moderate amount of protein. A meal containing this group would be something like a baked potato, vegetables and some meat, lean of course but it would not contain gravy or sour cream.

Dietary fat is a problem because it is full of calories which will be converted into body fat unlike calories that are consumed in food from other sources. Another problem is the obsession with fat free or low fat foods that food manufactures are stacking the shelves with which despite their popularity are not helping people lose weight.

Whilst completely false, the perception is that you can basically eat exactly what you want provided it is fat-free but there are still calories in the food which can easily be converted to body fat. The term fat-free can be a trap if you start to believe that you can eat any amount of fat-free food when it is far better to respond to hunger with healthy snacks.

Schools of thought differ on this subject but many nutritionists agree that eating smaller meals with a snack every 3 to four hours or between meals could be beneficial providing main meals are not missed. If you are really serious about trying to lose weight, you will have to consider natural weight loss as a long term proposition.

12 Weight Loss Walking the Nordic Way. AARP MEMBERS CAN DO THIS

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Weight loss doesn’t have to be something that you dread every day of the
week. This plan is so simple that any of us in the AARP age group can
benefit greatly and enjoy exercise at the same time

You should be eating good healthy food that doesn’t leave you feeling
starved although initially you might feel that way as you change from the
bulk poor quality food that you’ve been eating to smaller portions of better
quality food.

It can take time to your body to adjust and one of the best ways to help out
in this situation is to drink more water. Water plays a vital role in
regulating body temperature, moving nutrients and oxygen throughout the
body, cushioning the joints and protecting vital organs and tissues. Avoid
water in plastic containers and drink filtered water.

It take a good few minutes for your brain to realize you have eaten food
once you have swallowed it. That is why I tell my clients to serve their
portions on smaller plates and eat slower.

Most people realize that exercise is one of the best ways of losing weight
although there are a lot of people who are reluctant to exercise for one
reason or another. Adaptogen Plus can help you on your way to a fitter body.
Check it out here Adaptogenplus <http://trivita.com/13103901> Click on SHOP.
Top right category is *Mood Enhancement* scroll down and select
Adaptogenplus. Add it to your cart and pay direct to Trivita they will send
it to you.

For those people who are obese it can be quite difficult to exercise
although there are forms of exercise their can cater to virtually anybody.

Swimming biking and walking are three very good low impact forms of exercise
that can improve your fitness and reduce your body weight. They can speed up
your metabolism and help you to burn fat and swimming in particular is very
good for people who are overweight to the extent that they find walking
difficult.

Recently Nordic walking has become a lot more popular and this is a
particularly good form of exercise for two reasons. Firstly by using the
poles when you are walking you are using a lot more of your upper body
muscles for the exercise and in doing so this helps to burn more calories
than walking without them.

The other benefit of using the poles when walking is the fact that it takes
a lot of the stress off your knees and hips and this can be a godsend for
oversized people who find that their joints take quite a hammering when
walking due to their weight.

Is no wonder that Nordic walking is becoming one of the most popular forms
of exercise throughout the country. To help you with your restoration
program go to Leanology Appetite Control

Lose Weight

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

If you are wanting to lose weight you probably need to change your lifestyle and here are my suggestions

Cut calories
A gram of fat contains twice as many calories as a gram of carbohydrate or protein. Reduce high-fat foods in your diet, choose lower or fat-reduced options, use cooking oil and spreads sparingly and remove excess fat from meat to help you lose weight.

Include lower calorie options in your diet, such as fruit and vegetables. Bulky fibre-rich foods are also a good choice.

Try switching from white to whole meal bread, or choose a whole grain breakfast cereal.

Think about portion sizes
Portion sizes have increased over the years, especially when it comes to ready meals and snack foods. This means we’re consuming extra calories, but we adapt quickly to eating bigger portions and don’t tend to feel fuller as a result.Perhaps buy smaller sized plates.

Downsize potatoes, pasta, rice and fatty and sugary foods, and super size fruit and vegetables.

Watch what you’re drinking
Cut sugar-rich drinks and alcohol, and instead choose water, tea, coffee or artificially sweetened drinks.

Sugary drinks add extra calories to your diet but don’t make you feel full or satisfied or help you lose weight.

Keep a balanced diet
Remember the principles of a balanced diet - include plenty of fruit and vegetables (at least five portions a day), unrefined foods with more fibre, lean meats and low-fat dairy products.

Get active
Becoming more active doesn’t necessarily mean sweating it out in a gym. Instead, try the following way to lose weight:

  • Choose activities you enjoy and try to spend more time each week on these

  • Incorporate more activity into everyday life
  • Buy a pedometer and increase the number of steps you take each day

Another good way to lose weight is to become more active is to focus on spending less time sitting down. At home, limit the time you spend watching TV or in front of a computer screen. At work, take regular breaks and if you want to talk to a colleague, walk to their desk instead of sending an Email.

Fad diets don’t work
Diets that promise quick, effortless weight loss are best avoided. You may lose weight initially, but they’re often difficult to follow in the long term. Often they’re also very restrictive and may not provide all the nutrients your body needs.

Fad diets are those that:

  • Promise a quick, easy fix with rapid weight loss
  • Suggest that certain foods ‘burn fat’
  • Promote the eating of just one of two foods
  • Have lots of rules about how to eat
  • Sound too good to be true

Yo-yo dieting
Many people who lose weight tend to regain it over time. You can minimise the chance of this by making permanent lifestyle changes - by switching to low-calorie drinks and low-fat spreads, for example, or by eating smaller portions. Regular physical activity appears to be especially important in maintaining weight loss.

The following factors are important for maintaining weight loss:

Small, permanent dietary changes
Regular physical activity
Realistic goals
Regular weighing
Support from family and friends

Although no one would suggest yo-yo dieting is a good thing, there’s little evidence it’s harmful to health. However, it’s disappointing and can reduce your confidence and motivation to lose weight.

Recognise that in the period immediately following a diet you’re at high risk of weight gain and you need to take specific steps to avoid it.

Remember to weigh yourself regularly. If you notice your weight increasing, take action immediately. Don’t let a minor lapse become a major problem.

Lose Weight

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

There are many fad diets out there, like Adkins or the Zone diet to help you lose weight. Even crash dieting is quite popular with many people. But eating cabbage soup for a week does not seem healthy nor fun. Doing these diets may show results quickly, but in the end after you stop the diet you tend to gain all the weight back that you lost and sometimes even more.

According to the web site, www.netdoctor.co.UK the body will respond better to a gradual change in diet and exercise. The likelihood of gaining the weight back by doing this is slim. One important factor to consider is that in order to lose weight you must decrease the intake of daily calories and increase physical activity. A tip from netdoctor.co.UK says, “Think of weight loss in terms as permanently changing your eating habits.” This a beneficial tip because in the moment you want to lose weight, but remember in the long term that you want to keep the weight off. In order to lose weight, cutting out 300 to 500 calories a day will lead to losing an average of 1 to 2 pounds a week (www.netdoctor.co.UK). An article, by Diane Lofshult stated, that adults who check nutrition labels when grocery shopping had lower fat diets and cholesterol compared to adults who did not read nutrition labels (IDEA Fitness Journal). In addition, adults that read the nutrition facts had an easier time losing weight or maintaining their weight (Lofshult, IDEA Fitness Journal).

Expert Weight Loss Tips

Saturday, October 4th, 2008

Here is some expert weight loss advice from college professors studying weight loss or related fields, so this should appeal to you more than fad diets.

James O. Hill is the director of the Centre for Human Nutrition at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Centre in Denver. His main tips:

Set 10% of your weight as your weight loss goal. Restrict your calories, lose the 10%, then spend six months maintaining the weight loss with increased exercise. If you still need to lose weight after that, start again.

Work out with moderate intensity to increase your endurance. He says exercise doesn't make a difference for many, because it just doesn't burn enough calories. He says exercise becomes more important in maintenance of weight loss. My take: Burn more than you take in. It’s not rocket science, it’s just very difficult.

Weigh yourself regularly. at same time of day or week for immediate feedback.

Eat breakfast!!!

He says if you keep the weight off for three years, you can say it has been a lifestyle change.

Ralph La Forge studies the role of exercise in weight loss and is managing director of the Lipid and Disease Management Preceptorship Program at Duke University Medical Centre.

He says that most people can’t lose weight just by exercising. People overestimate the amount of calories the burn in a workout.

If you want to exercise, go for aerobic activity. He doesn't really support strength training for weight loss.

Do aerobic activity that is weight-bearing. Do longer, moderate-intensity workout. He knocks the idea of a fat-burning zone at low intensity.
