No matter what your age, body type, or fitness level, we’re pretty sure one of your main workout goals is to improve your abs. And why not? A flat midsection, with or without a visible six-pack, is the ultimate symbol of being fit and lean. (And yes, it looks great at the beach.) But it’s not just a matter of vanity—a strong core helps stabilize your entire body.

Still, whatever you’re doing to get fit, there’s always room for improvement where the core is concerned. Here are five tips to help you to get those great abs faster than ever:

  1. Work your entire core. Your "core," the trunk muscles of your abdomen, lower back, and pelvis, is a whole system that supports your body as you stand up straight, perform everyday activities, and work out. And it’s important to strengthen all these muscles, not just the rectus abdominals (the main "six-pack" muscles targeted by crunches). At the very least, you should strengthen the spinal erectors of the lower back to balance out your abs, which will help your posture and reduce the risk of back pain. Think of total-core training as increasing your functional fitness—meaning you won’t just look better, but you’ll also be able to do things better too.
  2. Take it slow. When you’re doing crunches or other ab-focused exercises, it’s easy to speed up and lose proper form, especially when you start to get tired. Either you let momentum carry you through much of the movement or you pull yourself up with your back and shoulders. But you’ll get the most benefit (and the least chance of injury) from your workout if you concentrate on measured, controlled movements. And keep the abdominals contracted the entire time. After all, they’re the ones that should be doing the work. When you can’t do any more reps with the proper form, it’s time to stop.
  3. Don’t overdo it. If you really want great abs, you may be tempted to grind out crunch after crunch to the exclusion of other exercises, or to do more ab-centred workouts than your fitness program recommends. But directly working your abs too often can do more harm than good. Like any muscle, the abdominals need to recover between workouts. If you find you aren’t improving the number of reps you can do or the amount of weight you can handle, that’s a sign that you’re over training, and you need to cut back.
  4. Don’t neglect the rest of your body. The more you work your entire body, the better it is for your abs. In fact, just about any full-body or compound movement, from push-ups to squats to dead lifts, takes a lot of ab effort. What’s more, working your full body will burn many more calories and raise your metabolism, which is important, because you also need to . . .
  5. No matter how much you strengthen your abdominal muscles, the only way to get a flat midsection is to lose body fat. That’s going to require a diet that’s high in protein and fibre, low in simple carbs, and full of bulky, nutrient-dense foods that keep you full with fewer calories—and of course, plenty of water. If you’re on a meal plan associated with a particular workout, make sure you’re really following it and not fudging here and there. (Keeping a food diary can help.) When you combine an effective full-body workout with a proper diet, getting the flat abs you’ve always wanted is just a matter of time.

Let us take our diet as a factor in reaching a healthy weight loss. We have to take note that putting our food intake in proper portions is important. Here are some food weight loss tips that you can follow.

First of all, you have to stop eating too much meat products. Yes, meat is a very important source of protein. However, too much of it can be very fatal for our body because its fats can cause us heart problems. With this, you can try to get more protein from other healthy sources like vegetables and eat a very small amount of meat.

The next food weight loss tip is to control your intake of high calorie foods. Today since most of us are always on the go due to our work, we are opting to eat meals from fast foods. However, we notice that these foods are very high in calories such as burgers and French fries. These contributes greatly to our weight so if it is possible, you can try to make yourself a homemade healthy meal. But if it is inevitable due to a very hectic schedule, what you can do is that you can opt to buy more healthy foods from fast foods like salad. In this way, you can have a healthy meal in a jiffy.

The next tip is something that people with sweet tooth would dislike. Healthy weight loss would require us to cut down or totally stop eating sweet foods. However, you can still take in sweet foods as a reward for yourself but do not reward yourself on a daily basis. You can take in a small amount of sweet food once a week or two. With this, you will see a great change in your weight in a faster rate.

If you are someone who does not want to be trapped in obesity then this is the time to commit yourself to a healthy weight loss regimen. This could be as easy as changing your food intake. With exercise, you will see the results in no time.

Most people think weight loss programs have to be complicated to fit in with age, sex and body type. As I am about to reveal many weight loss programs on the face of it look complicated, however this unnecessary complication is mainly to differentiate it from the competition. It can be very confusing to know which diet plan to follow with so much choice out in the marketplace.

Many weight loss programs out there make themselves different from the competition, by using different daily calorie ratios for the 3 main nutrients found in food. The three main nutrients are proteins, fats and carbohydrates. So for example, what you can have is high, medium, low and zero daily calories of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. There is so many different combinations you can with these 3 main nutrients use to make a weight loss plan. There is little wonder that there is so much competition out there with a vast number of different weight loss plans.

So why do so many diets fail people and why isn’t there one diet out there that has proven to consistently achieve permanent weight loss.

The real answer is to turn the first question around; instead it should read why do so many people fail in their dieting. This leads to answering the second question; there isn’t a diet that guarantees permanent weight loss, because it depends very much on the individual who is carrying out the diet.

So instead of recommending which diet you should follow, you need to understand why people fail diets in the long term, this can lead to stopping the cycle of putting weight back on when lost, thus achieving permanent weight loss.

Generally almost all diets work by using the different combinations of fats, proteins and carbohydrates for your daily calorie intake. In the short term by burning up more calories than you intake you will lose weight.

Recent studies back this up; when the popular commercial diets were compared against other over a 6-12 month period, they mostly showed similar weight loss results. One major study concluded that the person adhering to the diet, rather than the diet itself was the main indicator of whether the weight loss program would work or not.

So what this shows clearly that, the most likely way to succeed in achieving permanent weight loss depends on how well you adhere to a weight loss plan in the long term. So how can this be achieved?

A solution to achieving permanent weight loss lies in looking at making lifestyle changes; developing new positive habits that involve following weight loss programs in the long term. The simply fact changes like this simply do not happen overnight and take weeks, sometimes months to become an integrated part of a persons life.

Most experts in the field of health and nutrition would agree that the last 20 years have been one of the worst times in the history of health and well being because more and more people suffer from world’s largest ‘epidemic’— obesity.

Studies also show that the risk factors of obesity also include heart disease, sleep apnea and other breathing problems, diabetes, hypertension, stroke, gallbladder diseases, and various forms of cancer. Since there are so many health risks involved, people who are obese or morbidly obese are finding quick weight loss tips that can help them lose weight easily.

A GUIDE TO EFFECTIVE AND SAFE WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM

Obesity has indeed become a chronic condition through the years. Although it can be a "temporary problem" which can be solved and treated for a couple of months or years with a rigid diet, losing excessive weight gain is not always possible and easy.

For most obese people, it can be a frustrating and life-long effort if not addressed properly. In order to promote safe and effective weight loss, various weight loss programs have been created to provide long-term approach in controlling obesity. If you are determined to lose weight by enrolling into a specific weight loss program, here are some of the tips you can use to find that responsible and safe weight loss program for you.

- Make sure the diet is safe. You can do this by double-checking if the diet offered by the weight loss program includes the vitamins, minerals, and proteins required in the Recommended Daily Allowances (RDAs).

- Check if the weigh loss diet offers low calories. Since too much calorie intake is one of the primary reasons of obesity, make sure that the diet provided by the weight loss program you are planning to enrol is low in calories and not in essential and essential contents.

- A responsible weight loss program should be directed towards a slow and steady weight loss. Since weight loss cannot be achieved overnight, make sure that the weight loss program promotes slow but sure weight loss strategies. Most experts agree that the safest weight loss is about a pound a week after the first 2 weeks. It is expected that since many weight loss programs based losing weight with calorie-restricted diets, you will experience rapid weight loss during the 2 weeks. Don’t worry because this loss is mainly fluid and can be regained quickly when you go back to a normal-calorie diet. Unless your physician thinks that losing weight rapidly is best for your health condition would benefit, stick to quick weight loss.

- The weight loss program can give you an idea how much weight you should and you could lose, can present to you the appropriate weight-loss program for your body’s condition, and can give you a rough estimate on how much weight you should lose in a specific period of time.

- Check if the weight loss program you are planning to enrol with offers weight maintenance plans after the weight loss phase. A safe weight loss program must ensure the safety and effectively of the weight loss diet by monitoring its after effects. Inquire if the weight loss program offers weight maintenance because it is the most difficult part of controlling weight.

- Make sure that the weight program can help you permanently change your lifestyle towards healthy living. A responsible weight loss program should help the person change his/her dietary habits as well as the level of physical activity in order to avoid repeating the factors that led him/her to obesity before.

- Look for behaviour modification help. The weight loss program should include education in healthy eating habits and long-term plans in dealing with weight problems. It should also include individually tailored exercise programs for the student.

- Keep an eye on financial transparency. Make sure that the weight loss program provides a detailed statement of fees and actual costs of additional items like dietary supplements in your bill.

Desperate To Lose Weight USA Tips

Can you relate to this desperate dieter’s dilemma?
"I’m pretty good about my diet and exercise program during the week.  But when the weekend comes, all of that hard work goes out the window!  I constantly find myself ’starting over’ every Monday morning. How do I get out of this unproductive cycle?!"
One reason weekends are so difficult is that you fall out of your regular daily routines.  There are always potlucks, dinners, dates and family gatherings, where trouble is lurking in the form of buffet lines or rich desserts.  Weekend menus can also be more difficult to plan - and without a plan, you’re more likely to stray from the healthy habits you have been working so hard to develop.
The "Weekend Survival Guide" is designed to help your diet survive those dreaded weekends.  Keep it with you - in your purse, in the car - wherever you go.  The checklist and helpful tips can keep you focused and on track. Meanwhile, the inspirational quotes can give you a boost of well-timed motivation.  If nothing else, remember this: when you start feeling the temptation to slip, ask yourself how you will feel about your decisions once Monday morning rolls around.
TIPS FOR TURNING AWAY TEMPTATION
  a. Plan family activities like bike rides or outdoor games.  This helps you spend time with your family and burn calories all at once!
  b. Carry a water bottle with you to your weekend activities.  This will help you get your water for the day and resist the temptation to reach for a soda or other caffeinated beverage.
  c. Set some "weekend specific" goals for yourself based on the realities of what you’ll be doing.  They may look very different than your weekday goals, and that’s okay.
  d. If you are going to be out all day, pack some healthy snacks in case you get hungry.  There is nothing worse than being hungry at the mall, and the only food options are ice cream or pizza.
  e. Set Monday as your weigh-in day.  You are more likely to resist temptation if you have to face the scale first thing Monday morning.
  f. Plan ahead!!  If you are going out to eat, find the restaurant’s menu (and any available nutritional information) online.  You’ll have plenty of time to make a healthy choice before you get there.
  g. Don’t save all of your splurging for the weekends. Allowing yourself a few treats throughout the week will help you avoid the mindset that the weekend is an excuse to go bonkers. And by spacing your treats evenly, you’re less likely to get sudden, irresistible cravings.

With a little extra effort and planning, you can turn weekends into an enjoyable experience and an opportunity to keep your program moving in the right direction!

You need to come up with a fast weight loss program fast if you jump at the idea of going to the nearest restaurant whenever possible, polish off a whole bag of crunchies while watching a movie, avoid household chores because of laziness and go by car to the nearby grocery store even though it is just a couple of blocks away.

If you are caught in this situation, then look at yourself. Are you overweight? In all probability, you are! Now what? Well! There is a way out – A simple diet along with a regular exercise routine is the best fast weight loss program that can help you lose weight. You must remember that there are no short-cuts to losing weight.

Follow these steps to start afresh on a healthy weight loss routine:

  • First understand your body type and your lifestyle. See where you are going wrong and what you can do to bring about a change.
  • Remember that weight that is lost in a systematic manner can be maintained for a longer duration than weight that is lost through a crash course. This means that you need to lose weight at a regular pace by following a healthy approach towards your weight loss program.
  • Start by visiting your physician to see what he/she says about your body type. Don’t blame your genes for being overweight. Yes! Even though your mother or your grandmother might have been overweight, there is no theory that suggests that a simple diet accompanied with regular workouts would not aid your fast weight loss program.
  • Next, watch what you eat. Are you in a habit of eating whatever comes your way? Do you love to binge on oily, fried, spicy, high calorie meals? You need to forgo all such fatty food items and follow a simple diet. Try and keep a diet that provides you no more than 2000 calories in a day. It would be best if you asked a dietician to suggest you a per day calorific consumption along with the food items that would aid weight loss.
  • Finally, the most difficult part of it all – a regular workout. You would need to sweat out your extra weight by going for a walk, a jog, or playing a strenuous game that can help you lose weight. Also remember that weight once lost is not lost forever. You would have to make exercise an integral part of your lifestyle to maintain your lost weight so that you live a healthy, disease free life ahead.

The above ‘IS’ the simplest and the ‘ONLY’ route to fast weight loss. So get up and do something now. Once you determine to get your eating under control and exercise at least 4 times a week, you’ll know that losing weight is actually ‘lightning fast’.

Using an Online Fitness Trainer

"Before (and during!) signing up with Global Health and Fitness (GHF) I thought the idea of having an online trainer - and particularly one that is on the other side of the world from me - was fine for serious body buffs or experienced gym goers. Well, I was wrong. This program is working for me, someone who is very overweight and on the bottom rung of the fitness ladder, with more injuries than you can shake a stick at.

I can only get to the gym 3-4 times a week but even after a short time I’ve seen a real difference. I’ve already achieved 10% fat loss on this program. I also have noticeably less pain from my injuries (back and knee) - I feel really great!

As my body reshapes, my metabolism has done a U-turn. Yo-yo dieting and a couple of serious illness have ‘traumatized’ my metabolism. Since starting the GHF program - and this is the most amazing thing to me - I have gone from never feeling full to never feeling hungry. I now actually have to remind myself to eat

Over the past weeks I’ve found a couple of advantages to having an online trainer. One is that I can workout according to my timetable, and not try work around ‘live’ trainers who are always booked at peak times. The other advantage is distance. My time zone is some 12-14 hours different from the US so I can email a quick question in the evening and have a reply in the morning. Excellent service!

To anyone thinking of joining GHF, I say stop thinking and do it. Don’t leave it another day. This program works. Don’t worry about going to the gym armed with printouts of exercises and workout schedules when everyone there seems to know what they are doing - because a lot of them don’t know what they are doing. Follow GHF’s instructions and you can’t go wrong.

After years of trying quick, over-hyped, gimmicky (and sometimes expensive) weight loss fixes, I’m relieved to finally find a well-rounded, sensible and effective way to regain my health and get fit and strong. It’s going to take time to reach my goals but, as I know ‘fast’ doesn’t work, I’m happy to take it slow.

A very big thank you to the entire GHF staff for your encouragement and for getting me going on the road to good health and fitness!!"

Helen Lucas

Many people search for a magic formula to lose more weight. DIETS: High-Calcium, High-Protein, Low-Fat, High-Carb, Low-Carb, Beverly Hills… each claims its super-effectiveness in weight loss. But what does research show? No difference. It’s all about the total calories. I should have gotten a clue when, at a nutrition conference, I saw one of my colleagues wearing a pink T-shirt that said, “IT’S THE CALORIES, STUPID!”

A recent study conducted by Dr. Frank M. Sacks, of the Harvard School of Public Health, studied four groups of dieters for two years. Each dieter cut its daily calories by 750 Kcal. After 6 months, all four groups averaged a 7% body weight loss. After tow years, there was no statistical difference in weight loss or waist circumference changes between the groups.

The four groups were:

- A low-fat, average-protein diet: 20% fat, 15% protein, and 65% carbs;

- A low-fat, high-protein diet: 20% fat, 25% protein, and 55% carbs;

- A high-fat, average-protein diet: 40% fat, 15% protein, and 45% carbs; and

- A high-fat, high-protein diet: 40% fat, 25% protein, and 35% carbohydrates.

However, after two years, most participants were having difficulties sticking to their goals, and the groups still averaged a BMI of 31 to 32 Kg/m2, in spite of high motivation, education, and personal counselling.

Interestingly, the strongest predictor of weight loss was attendance at group sessions (0.2 kg for every session attended) across all groups.

So, when you decide to go on a weight loss program, pick a plan that appeals to you, hop between plans if you like, but keep one focus: Total calories. CUTTING 500 CALORIES PER DAY will provide a ONE POUND PER WEEK weight loss. Don’t feel bad if you “Cheat” on your diet: Just total up the calories.

Are vegetarians are more successful at weight loss than other people? Of course people may become vegetarians for reasons other than losing weight but because they tend to eat more fruits and vegetables they also tend to eat fewer calories overall. So can vegetarian diets help you with your weight loss goals? Let’s take a look…

The epidemic of obesity in the USA cannot be denied. More and more people than ever are on diets and trying to lose weight so naturally a vegetarian diet has appeal. Debating the pros and cons of a vegetarian diet are beyond the scope of this article, rather we’ll focus on a few facts so you can make a decision about whether or not a vegetarian diet can help you achieve your weight loss goals.

Many studies have shown that people who follow vegetarian diets decrease their risk of cancer by 30% to 50% and they also tended to have lower rates of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure. It is unclear whether it was simply the diet alone that made the difference or people who are vegetarian tend to be more active overall. If the diet did play a role it was likely due to the inclusion of fruits and vegetables versus higher fat foods.

Fruits and vegetables tend to have fewer calories than processed foods and meats. Therefore, simple math will tell you that if you substitute fruits and vegetables for highly caloric processed foods on a regular basis, you will tend to eat fewer calories overall. The fewer calories you eat, the more weight you will lose. That said, vegetarian diets alone are no guarantee of weight loss. It is just as easy to over eat healthy foods such as nuts, beans and breads as it is junk food. So while a vegetarian diet may indeed be healthier, an individual choosing it must still be mindful of portion control and not over eat. Remember that if you eat more calories than you burn off, you’re going to gain weight, whether you’re vegetarian or not. So don’t not forget to exercise as well.

Desperate To Lose Weight

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

Well the 4th of July is now behind us and it back on the diet to lose weight, so what is the best way to lose weight and keep it off?

Your weight loss plan needs to be slow and consistent, a healthy weight loss plan delivers small successes everyday, building momentum along the way, peaking at the point in time when you reach you’re goal. This is key to dieting success.

Most dieters do the opposite…they experience fast weight loss early, their momentum peaks mid-way, and by the end of the diet, they are completely deflated. With no energy left to carry them into the next stage of weight loss — weight gain prevention — most dieters give up at this point.

Remember every diet plan need to also include exercise to burn off excess fat and tone your body.
