Vitamin B-12 - Provides Energy to Lose Weight

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

A study has been recently published that demonstrate the importance of vitamin b-12 in supporting healthy brain functions. The first study we will to point out is The University of Oxford study, published in the journal Neurology, in which they tested the 107 apparently healthy volunteers over a five-year period.

Older people with lower than average vitamin B-12 levels were more than six times more likely to experience brain shrinkage, researchers concluded. Some studies suggest two out of five people are deficient in the vitamin. The Oxford study looked at a group of people between 61 and 87, splitting it into thirds depending on the participants’ vitamin B-12 levels. Professor David Smith, who directs the Oxford Project to Investigate Memory and Aging, said he now planned a trial of vitamin B in the elderly to see if taking them could slow brain shrinkage.

He said: “This study adds another dimension to our understanding of the effects of vitamin B on the brain - the rate of shrinkage of the brain as we age may be partly influenced by what we eat.”

Shrinkage has been strongly linked with a higher risk of developing dementia at a later stage and Rebecca Wood, the chief executive of the Alzheimer’s Research Trust, said further research was needed.

“This study suggests that consuming more vitamin B-12 through eating meat, fish, fortified cereals or milk as part of a balanced diet might help protect the brain. Liver and shellfish are particularly rich sources of Vitamin B-12.

Dr Susanne Sorensen, from the Alzheimer’s Society said: “Shrinkage is usually associated with the development of dementia. “As vitamin B-12 may be given as a food supplement, it may be useful to include tests of vitamin B12 levels in the general assessment of health of older individuals.

“This is another example of why it is crucial for people to lead a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet rich in B vitamins and antioxidants. The best way to reduce your risk of developing dementia is to keep active, eat a balanced diet, don’t smoke and visit your physician to get your blood pressure and cholesterol checked.”

Vitamin B-12 is naturally found in foods that come from animals, including fish, meat, poultry, eggs, milk, and milk products. Fortified breakfast cereals are a particularly valuable source of vitamin b-12 for vegetarians. To help improve your daily intake of vitamin b-12 here is a list of some foods that provide excellent sources:

Mollusks, clams - cooked, 3 oz. - 1400 %DV

Liver, beef, - braised, 1 slice - 780% DV

Lose Weight USA - SAD Facts

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

This is a reprint from recent weight loss article by Dr. Jeffrey S. McCombs

As our country deals with the effects of past deregulation and the current financial crisis, I am struck by how America has also become deregulated in the area of its dietary choices and the resultant health crisis that is developing as a result. Sound dietary practices have been dismantled and replaced by eating whenever, whatever, and however it suits us in the moment. Common sense management of our food choices has been neglected in favour of fad diet fixes and Flintstone vitamins.

The wisdom of the body as a temple that needs to be cherished and cared for has been replaced by the philosophy of the body as an amusement park and I’ve got a season pass.

It’s no mistake that the acronym for the Standard American Diet is S.A.D. When America exports the dietary principles of S.A.D. to another country, a decline in the health of its people quickly follows. It also holds true for foreigners who immigrate here, as they quickly find out that their health declines and their weight increases when eating as the natives do. In all fairness, America should have signs at its entry borders that warn of the risks that go with adopting our S.A.D. lifestyle.

Using the government’s Body Mass Index (BMI) standard, a calculation based on height and weight, over 66% of Americans are overweight and 34% are obese. If current trends continue, by 2015, it’s estimated that 75% of American adults will be overweight or obese. By 2030, that estimate increases to more than 86 percent of adults, and by 2048, well let’s just say that finding a normal weight person will be like finding a needle in a haystack. The BMI standard isn’t without just criticism, as other body measurements are not considered. When considering the overall trend, however, it’s obvious that Americans are getting fatter and the associated illnesses and healthcare costs that accompany this trend are also on the rise.

Being overweight increases our risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, cancer, liver and gall bladder disease, osteoarthritis, infertility, and various other related diseases and conditions. All of these are signs of lifestyle mismanagement, not medication deficiencies.

I imagine that a pharmaceutical company’s Board of Directors looks upon America’s sedentary lifestyle and standard diet much in the same way that a cannibal looks upon a newly caught fat missionary prior to feasting. Their gains are now our gains.

The pharmaceutical industry continues to propagate the philosophy of there’s nothing wrong with us. It’s not our fault. It’s just genetics, hormones, and other uncontrollable dysfunctions in our bodies that they will soon have a drug for. So, don’t worry, keep eating. For heaven’s sake, there’s no need to deprive your self of anything. Eat! You’ve earned it. Eat! You deserve it. Eat! It’s the holidays. Eat, eat, eat!

President-Elect Barack Obama keeps reminding us that we need to prepare ourselves for making sacrifices in order to correct the excesses of the past. This applies as much to our diet and lifestyle choices as much as it does to the economy. If sacrifices are to be made, then we can choose to sacrifice stupidity for wisdom. We can live up to our potential and leave behind the excuses and reasons for not taking care of ourselves.

Over half of Americans lead a sedentary lifestyle. The current government recommendation calls for 30 minutes of exercise 5 days a week. I have always thought that the government usually gets it half-right. Exercising 60 minutes 5 days a week is probably even better. Start where you are and go from there. Leave the “have to do it/be it/have it now” attitude behind. Evolve your desires to allow for gradual progress to have its impact.

In his book “What May Be” Piero Ferrucci states, “You must not follow your feelings. Your feelings must follow you.” We must begin to exhibit an emotional intelligence that directs our food choices. We must eat with a conscious awareness of how wish we to transform our bodies, for our bodies are transforming from moment-to-moment whether we like it or not. How it transforms can be up to us.

So as Thanksgiving approaches, I believe that it’s time to be thankful for the abundance and opportunities that we have as Americans. It’s time to invest in ourselves and our future. We can create something remarkable with our lives and share our life stories with others. We can be a nation of everyday heroes, ordinary people living extra-ordinary lives.

As an old adage states, “If not now, when? If not me, who?”

Dr. Jeffrey S. McCombs is a 3rd generation Doctor of Chiropractic, author of the book “LifeForce,” and developer of the McCombs Plan. His 25 years of ongoing research and practice emphasizes addressing the nutritional, biochemical, structural, emotional, and environmental aspects of acute and chronic health conditions in his patients

Lose Weight USA - Flatten your Stomach

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Five ways to get a flat stomach

Perhaps the biggest myth of the fitness industry is that you need to perform sit ups to get a flat stomach, this simply isn’t true.

Despite what you may have read in magazines or heard in the gym you can’t lose fat from specific parts of the body.

It may not be nice to hear but fat is basically lost randomly on the body, for some people they lose it on their bum first but for others it may be there legs, it’s completely random and varies from person to person.

But there is good news; if you lose enough fat from the body you will eventually lose it from the stomach as well, even if you are one of these people who are prone to putting on fat around their abdomen.

So here are five proven ways to achieve a flat stomach and lose weight, by following these basic principles you should start to see fat loss results within as little as 10 days.

(1) Nutrition

Avoid all sugar in your diet as it’s the top culprit for putting on body fat. This includes sweets, chocolate and even fruit juices since they contain a lot of fructose, a natural form of sugar.

Basically every time we eat a sugary food, it releases a hormone called insulin into the body. Insulin is a storage hormone and it tells the body to store fat whilst also preventing the burning of fat.

(2) Cardiovascular training

Perform your cardiovascular training, such as a light jog for 40 minutes, first thing in the morning before eating any breakfast as this is the perfect time for your body to start burning fat.

After not eating for 7 hours (because you are sleeping) your muscle glycogen levels and your blood sugar levels are at their lowest so this means during your morning run, cycle or swim you start to use the fat on your body as a source of energy rather than the muscle glycogen it usually uses.

(3) Water

The Institute of Medicine advises that ‘men consume roughly 3.0 litres (about 13 cups) of total beverages a day and women consume 2.2 litres (about 9 cups) of total beverages a day.’

This is so important for fat loss because if the body doesn’t have a sufficient supply of water, the kidneys cannot function efficiently.

At this point the surplus workload is done by the liver meaning that it can’t do its job of metabolising stored fat for energy properly resulting in less fat being burnt.

(4) Weight training

If women weight train properly and correctly they will never have to perform a sit-up ever again, because the stomach is worked out enough during these exercises.

But weight training can also increase your metabolism so you carry on burning calories long after you have stopped exercising. This is unlike normal cardiovascular training, like jogging, which only burns calories for the time you are training.

(5) Supplementation

In conjunction with these four tips, you could try Leanology to help lose weight , Leanology can do this because its capsules are the only product on the market with Converta™– the fat burning accelerator.

Or, try Appetite Control – these chews contain several key ingredients to help curb your appetite, including Hoodia, CLA and best of all, Pinnothin Oil…clinically proven to help curb your appetite in minutes.

Both are available from TriVita.

Always remember to consult your GP before taking any new medication or supplements.

Lose Weigth USA - Weight Loss

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

Most doctors don’t want you to know about natural weight loss diet pills. I’ll tell you why that is in a while. But first, let’s see what’s the big deal with natural slimming pills…

In theory, we can all lose weight, even without any diet pills. However, that requires an enormous amount of patience, discipline and will-power. Something that most people simply don’t have.

That’s where natural weight loss pills come into the picture. They kick-start the weight loss process and help you see results much faster. Just the motivation that losing weight quickly can give you is fantastic.

Natural dieting pills are different from the weight loss drugs sold in the pharmacy. They don’t contains the dangerous synthetic chemicals that most of the “medical weight loss aids” contain. Most diet drugs have several side-effects like making you irritable, sleepless and jittery.

Natural weight loss pills, on the other hand, rarely have side-effects, especially if you use them responsibly.

So, which are the best natural weight loss diet pills for *you*?

The answer is a clear and definitive… “it depends.”

What exactly do you want the natural diet pills to help you with?

- Do you want them to suppress your appetite so you eat less?

- Do you want them to increase your metabolism so you burn more calories, even when you sleep?
- Do you want them to block some of the fat you digest from being absorbed, so you can eat your favourite foods and still not gain weight?

- All of the above?

Many popular appetite-suppressant pills contain Hoodia. It’s a cactus from the Kalahari desert in Africa. It basically tell your brain that you have had enough food so you are not as hungry. If you really have an issue with over-eating, this can work extremely well.

Natural pills that increase your metabolism are known as thermogenics. Basically, they increase the heat of your body so you burn more calories, even at rest. If you burn more calories, then you lose more weight, as a result. Common ingredients found in thermogenic pills are cayenne, guarana and yerba mate.

Fat-blocking pills contain Neopuntia which binds with the fat you just ingested and doesn’t allow it to be absorbed instantly as it happens usually. They can bind up to 25-30% of the fat you ingest and the fat is later eliminated naturally from the body.

All the above types of weight loss pills can be very, very effective - and the good thing is that they don’t even require a prescription. By the way, did you know that many doctors are actually *paid* by pharmaceutical companies to prescribe their drugs? That’s right - it’s a good way for many “good docs” to make “some extra change.”

Just be careful to use the natural weight loss pills as recommended. Each bottle of natural pill you buy comes with instructions. For example, you may take an appetite suppressant 1 hour before a meal so you won’t feel as hungry when the time to eat comes. Or, you may take a thermogenic in the early afternoon to help you burn more calories during the “afternoon slump” but not just before bed because you may have trouble slipping. Or, you may take a fat blocking natural pill whenever you eat something with a lot of fat (like a hamburger or ice-cream).

Most of the pharmaceutical drugs contain just one ingredient. However, many natural weight loss pills contain several natural ingredients to help you lose weight faster. They basically try to hit the enemy (fat) from many different angles…

Lose Weight USA - Weight Loss Capsules

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

Many people are searching for quick and effective weight loss. They want to drop countless pounds in a matter of a week and they want to keep it off permanently. Well, quick weight loss is a very challenging process and it requires just the right type of motivation. don’t expect too much at once; that is why the most important thing is setting realistic goals. Given that each pound of fat equals 3,500 calories, you need to be realistic about how many calories you can burn in one day.

Once you have figured out how many calories you want to burn daily, you need to set up a healthy diet plan and an exercise routine for weight loss. Your diet should include all of the necessary food groups because your body needs a lot of nutrients every day. Try consuming more fruit, vegetables, whole grains, protein, lean meats, fiber, and fat-free dairy. Dieting is not really about restricting yourself from majority of foods, it is about portion control. You can still have most of the foods you love, but in moderation. Try having smaller meals more frequently throughout the day. Some foods you should stay away from include fast foods and other foods that are high in fat. This can be especially tricky if you frequently visit local restaurants. It is much better to eat at home and if you decide to eat out, stick with diet friendly meals (which most restaurants have).

And if you are still having problems with your appetite, there are certain all supplements which can help in suppressing your appetite. The Leanology capsules have made quite an impact on people who were struggling with appetite control. So as you can see, with the right motivation and goals, weight loss can be quick and effective.

Lose Weight USA - Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12

Source: University of Maryland Medical Centre - 2006

Vitamin B12, also called Cobalamin, is one of eight water-soluble B vitamins. All B vitamins help the body to convert carbohydrates into glucose (sugar) which is “burned” to produce energy.

Heart Disease

Many studies indicate that patients with elevated levels of the amino acid homocysteine are roughly 1.7 times more likely to develop coronary artery disease and 2.5 times more likely to suffer from a stroke that those with normal levels. Homocysteine levels are strongly influenced by B complex vitamins, particularly folic acid, B6 and Vitamin B12.

Healthy Nerves

Vitamin B12 is an especially important vitamin for maintaining healthy nerve cells and it aids in the production of DNA and RNA, the body’s genetic material. Vitamin B12 also works closely together with folic acid to regulate formation of red blood cells.

Anti-Stress

Similar to other B vitamins, Vitamin B12 is considered an “anti-stress” vitamin because it is believed to enhance the activity of the immune system and improves the body’s ability to withstand stressful conditions.

Vitamin B12 is best absorbed into you blood stream when taken in sublingual form i.e. when it is contained within a pill designed to be placed under your tongue.

Vitamin B12 Boosts your energy and is just what you need to help maintain your fitness regime which is essential for weight loss.

Weight Loss

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Obesity or excessive weight is not just a threat to the physical beauty of a person- rather it is a threat to one’s health. Obesity can lead to diseases which may bear mortal threat to a person. Today, with advancements of medical technologies it is true that there have been hundreds of ways claiming themselves unbeatable as weight losing weapon, yet all the researchers believe in one ground fact that- the best way of weight loss is by changing eating behaviour.

Now for changing eating behaviour, there are two perspectives to be focused:

  1. Changing the type of foods being consumed.
  2. Changing the amount of food being taken.

Unless, one is able to emphasize both these issues it can be said for sure that you won’t be able to pursue weight loss for long term. But, neither of the perspectives can be attended at once, nor they can be attended in the wrong order. For fruitful outcomes, one has to first reduce the quantity of food you are taking, and then you should go for changing the menu. Weight reduction processes are lengthy and we expect long term results from them. By following the above procedure, we make sure that the diet process we are undergoing suits our health and doesn’t put sudden stress on our physique.

For changing the amount of food you take, you must opt for reducing the quantity in small amounts rather than cutting foods radically off your menu.

You can also try to use smaller dishes to serve food, as well as use portion controlled food packages.

Never watch TV or read books while you are eating, because concentrating deeply to somewhere else makes you concentrate less on the amount you are eating.

When you come to the stage of changing your menu, try to reduce amount of carbohydrates from your meal.

Have a balanced diet which emphasizes on vitamins, minerals and proteins.

You don’t necessarily have to give in to tasteless dishes, venture for newer dishes which are healthy as well.

Weight Loss Diet

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

The Grapefruit Diet is a fast and painless way weight loss diet. Known in the 1930s as the Hollywood Diet, the Grapefruit Diet has been called a fad diet by many. However, a study in 2004 by Dr Ken Fuijioka and the Nutrition and Metabolic Research centre at Scripps Clinic found that there was a strong correlation between the consumption of grapefruit at every meal and weight loss. This has propelled the popularity of the Grapefruit Diet due to its simplicity and effectiveness.

The Grapefruit Diet consists of consuming either half a grapefruit or a glass of grapefruit juice before every meal. The good news is that grapefruits are low in calories and sodium, and has been shown to decrease cholesterol levels and the risk of developing diabetes. The consumption of grapefruit reduces the level of insulin in the body, which in turn is crucial in the blood sugar and fat metabolism regulation processes. This allows you to process the energy from your consumption, and the naringin in grapefruits blocks the uptake of fatty acids, enhancing weight loss instead of fat storage. The key to remember in the Grapefruit Diet is to reduce consumption of insulin.

A minimum consumption of 8 classes of water a day is needed, and having a cup of coffee is allowed but not encouraged as it obstructs the weight loss process. The grapefruit is vital in the diet as it kick starts the fat burning process. Exercise is also not encouraged when you are on the diet as the low calorie intake does not provide enough energy to support your activities.

A general Grapefruit Diet weight loss menu consists of bacon and eggs in the morning, and servings of meat and salads for lunch and dinner. It also includes an optional before bed snack, such as a glass of milk or tomato juice. All these meals are preceded with either half a grapefruit, or an 8oz glass of unsweetened grapefruit juice. The best part of this diet is that there is no restriction on the quantity of meat and salads you are consuming, so you don’t have to worry about going hungry. The use of butter liberally in preparation of food is also encouraged.

In a nutshell, the Grapefruit Diet has been proven to work, and is highly effective. However, it is strongly recommended only as a short term guide to weight loss, and needs to be followed with a healthier diet in the long term for sustained weight loss.
